Since 1994, Rougemount Co-operative Homes has stood as a vibrant and welcoming community in the heart of Durham Region. Built by families with a vision for inclusivity, Rougemount is more than just housing—it’s a home for people of all cultures, abilities, and backgrounds.

Our six-story, 105-unit co-op is a place where couples, singles, young families, and elders come together, contributing in their own unique ways to enrich our shared community. Designed to meet the housing needs of over 200 people, Rougemount embodies the founding families’ dream: a community built with intention, care, and a spirit of belonging.

Our Mission Statement

Rougemount Co-operative Homes exists to provide safe, secure, affordable, congenial housing. It will welcome people of varied ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The Co-operative will ensure that all members hold a valued role. It will foster an intentional community based on neighbourliness, mutual respect, and helpfulness.

  • is based on traditional co-operative principles of mutual ownership, mutual effort and support. It belongs to, and is owned and controlled equally by all members.
  • ensures that members who have handicapping conditions will have full voting rights and hold a powerful, valued role in the design, governance, and operation of the co-operative.
  • creates natural opportunities for interactions between people with disabilities and other citizens; creates opportunities for working together and expects that lasting personal relationships will develop.
  • creates continuity of home life and relationships and a sense of security. Even though individual members may leave from time to time, there remains a strong circle of friends and supportive neighbours.
  • may assist other co-operatives or groups to establish similar integrated housing arrangements.

Diversity is designed into our Co-op’s membership, because that is the root of rich community life. Everyone has equal rights and obligations. Many people have found Co-op living a fun, fulfilling experience.
